The Many Ways Social Media Affects Parenting Online & Offline!

Yesterday evening, I had a very interesting conversation with a parent who joined Facebook after the persistence of his friends. He spoke of his two sons’ reactions when he requested to add them as friends on Facebook by saying “My older son did not hesitate to add me but my younger one felt as if I wanted to stalk him!” He then spoke of how Facebook, in a way, was able to bring him closer to his older son who lives abroad through looking at his posted pictures and status updates.

Parents: Always stay within arms reach

Parents: Always stay within arms reach

This got me thinking….

How do social media tools, channels and platforms affect parenting habits? Is social media widening or narrowing down the generation gap between parents and children? Are parents able to obtain more advice on good parenting habits through social media than any time before?

Parenting is hard as it is!

Aside from the regular day to day behaviors that parents are required to teach their children and the values they need to instill in them, nowadays, parenting seems to have become an even more complex task with the added responsibility of teaching children how to behave online and how to use social media venues! In order to do that properly, parents need to actually sign up and  take time to try out those venues adding more pressure on the parents and their time management approach in efforts to acquire greater skills and knowledge about how social media can influence their children!

Another added responsibility that parents now have due to social media is having the ability to direct children towards the best utilization of those platforms in order to develop a passion in a certain field and use social media to grow this passion and promote it later on. The old “hit the books” saying is not sufficient anymore!

Moreover, and since children “are inherently and intuitively curious naturalists… sponges for knowledge, absorbing, retaining and using new information at astounding rates”, parents should be aware now, more than ever, of their own behaviors throughout their daily conduct inside the house, with others and even through their use of the Internet and social media channels.

Social media paving the way for better parenting….

In a more positive outlook on this matter, and with disregard to the pressures social media can impose on parents, there seems to be a bright light down this web 2.0 tunnel! Many parents seem to have learned how to better connect and deal with their kids through their use of social media, getting them closer to their children and portraying them as “cool technology savvy parents”.

Furthermore, many new social media sites and services such as ParentDish – a site that offers advice, news, opinions and reviews for moms and dads who want to be informed, educated parents – and WeezKids – a family friendly social media channel – are emerging in order to enhance the overall parent-child online and offline experience. Another example is  Educating Kids and Parents about Social Media from Clearcast Digital Media.

A Parent’s Guide to Technology

Finally, and as you can see, there is no clear cut line between the added value social media brings into the parenting equation and the pressures social media can impose on parent-child relationships but at least after reading this post, you can formulate your own opinion of how to deal with this issue.

Looking forward to reading your feedback.

Got a Debate to Ignite? 5 Dedicated Online Debate Services Compared

It’s the communications revolution of the Internet that made it successful in the first place, it’s also the communications evolution that defined the rising of Web 2.0.  Debate has always been one of the most popular forms of communication that people reside to in order to resolve conflicts and share information.

People have always utilized every possible available platform to debate one another; face to face, phones, emails, message boards, blogs, and now twitter – all have been means for communication and debate. But are there any dedicated platforms for debate online?

We did our research, thinking that there should be many good debate websites out there, only to find out that there are only a few:

All 5 Debate Platforms Traffic compared at Compete.com

All 5 Debate Platforms Traffic compared at Compete.com

1. Debate.org: It is a sophisticated membership-based online debating platform  designed to provide an easy and free system to intellectually challenge, debate and communicate on the Web. The debate is cut into rounds where two contenders present their arguments. Votes can only be cast when the debate is over. It is good that they have such rounds and time limits for each one, but we feel that it would be better if they allow people to vote before the time is up, and also to show people’s comments right below the arguments instead of in a separate tab.

The core strength of debate.org lies in its social networking options which include adding friends, challenging others, exchanging messages between members and sharing debates with other social networks platforms. It has also an addictive nature due to the point and trophy system they carry.

The weakness they have is that they do not offer any widgets or plugins to embed debates on your own site. They also require membership from users, even if you just want to add a simple comment.

iPhone Porn Debate: Are You With or Against?

We’re bringing these videos to your iPhone, iPod Touch …. so that you can take them anywhere – your office, the bathroom, or the supply closet. Wherever you go, your porn goes with you…. people will be asking “Is that an iPod in your pocket or are you happy to see me?”

What kind of message is that? I mean seriously! Do we really want to help promote such a wide propagation of porn and nudity on such a large social media platform such as the iPhone?

iPhone Welcomes Porn

iPhone Welcomes Porn

In order to be as unbiased as possible regarding this sensitive (and dangerous) topic, I have prepared a list of pros and cons for the topic of mobile porn, especially that related to the iPhone iPorn!

The List of Cons:

  • Did the “If you’re not yet 18, leave the site now” ever work before? Why does Apple think it can really protect children from finding porn so easily on a iPhone when they were able to unlock satellite parental codes!
  • Isn’t the porn industry supposed to be based on privacy and discretion? Wouldn’t this promote sexual abuse at the workplace, in the streets, on public buses, in colleges and so on?
  • Is iPhone, in a way, promoting addiction to porn and objectifying women?
  • Guys, be prepared for some awkward moments if your female boss picks up your phone and sees that nude wallpaper!

The List of Pros:

  • With the economical downturns, the well-known concept of “sex sells” can help iPhone application developers make some money.
  • There are already so many porn sites out there accessible via the iPhone’s built-in browser, and each iPhone is hooked to the Web by default. So, why not an app?
  • As far as societies are concerned, it is okay for adults to browse for porn.
  • Higher market share for iPhone (yes, they might benefit largely from such a move).

Now that we have laid down the two sides of the debate, are you with or against?

Top 10 Web Startup Business Screwups!

Why do many new web startups, with great ideas, valuable assets and deep motivation, fail? What are the major mistakes startups commit leading them to failure? What can be done to prolong the life of a startup rather than bring its business life to a guaranteed end?

It’s sad: the percentage of failed startups. It’s almost depressing! Even years ago, going back to the 90’s, it seems that startups have been failing continuously yet more discretely since social media channels and Web 2.0 were not in play!

A Table of Web Companies that Vanished!

A Table of Web Companies that Vanished!

Now many of you out there will think: why should I consider opening my own startup when there’s a 50-50% chance that it’s going to fail? Why not just apply for a stable company and settle for being an employee with a steady income? I beg to differ, the remaining successful 50% could be perceived positively! What failing startups lacked is the ability to learn from the mistakes of the many others! Yet now, with the abundant availability of failure stories, both online and offline, it has become easier to learn from the mistakes of others and try hard to avoid them.

So here’s what I’m going to do for this particular post: I’m going to choose a list of startups that failed and point out their mistakes clearly, explaining how they could be avoided in future ventures.

  1. Simplicity Does Not Substitute for Functionality!
    • AlmondRocks (as we were able to conclude from the little resources we found) created blogs that were too simple that they were actually useless!
  2. Don’t Underestimate Competition:
    • TinFinger Took their competition, Wikipedia – one of the top ten websites worldwide- lightly. They also concentrated on the technical side of the interface (RDF triples and semantic web) rather than the friendliness of the user experience.
    • Feedster, a search engine which seems to have been resurrected then killed again, is yet another example of underestimating competition, in this case: Google! [read full article >>]

Twitter Going Green for Iran – Will social media help shape the future of Iran?

Over 160,000 Twitter users have turned green in a universal movement that is meant to give support and consolidation to people’s demonstrations in Iran. Iranian crisis have proved to everyone that the world is no longer the same, and that social media has empowered people like never before.

Turn Your Twitter Avatar Green to Support Iran

Turn Your Twitter Avatar Green to Support Iran

Twitter didn’t just knock down well established conventional news agencies and reigned itself as the top source of fresh news, but it has also grown up to become a network of human support for people struggling for justice. In today’s world, people can do their daily activities, be productive and at the same time rally for human rights.

While Twitter dominated news coverage of how social media is helping the Iranian protesters, one can’t neglect the power and support other social networks have provided. YouTube and Flicker managed to give us real visuals of what’s going on, blogs served as live testimonials, and social bookmarking websites like Reddit and Digg, with their millions of readers, managed to push stories coming from Iran to the top. On Reddit, for instance, a help message gained popularity for asking Twitterers to change their time zone to 3:30 PM GMT in order to make the job of Iranian security forces of hunting down bloggers much harder.

Today, Mashable compiled a social media time-line for the Iranian Crisis. It is worth checking out how social media is helping up in shaping the state of Iran. Whether governments like it or not, nowadays, people have power – thanks to social media!

Social media gives us hope for a better future of people’s empowerment, it imposes many threats to dictatorships. Some are already working hard to stay in control. Are they fighting a lost battle? I certainly hope so.

Redditors, here is what you vote up for…

Reddit is a tough environment; its crowd is both vocal and opinionated. Reddit is built in a way that focuses on conversation and dialogue. Comments have karma points of their own, which in a way guarantees their quality as much as the submitted stories.

Thank you jyoungest1 for the picture

Thank you jyoungest1 for the picture

redditors take pride and believe that they have better quality stories than other social bookmarking sites, but what really makes a story popular on Reddit is not only its quality but also its innovative catchy title. Reddit doesn’t provide a space for a short description for the submitted stories. It is something to pay attention to when submitting a story. On Reddit, a descriptive title is A MUST.

So, what do redditors vote for in term of categories, stories and titles?

Controversy: With a system that has dialogue as its core feature; controversial stories become an instant magnet for redditors’ attention. Miss California may have made the biggest mistake of her life; with one sentence she managed to upset not only the gay community but also Reddit’s crowd.

25 Hard Learnt Twitter Survival Lessons: Dos and Don’ts!

What are the best Twitter practices an active tweep can carry out to make the best out of his/her overall Twitter usage? How can you gain the trust and retweets of other tweeps? And what are the things that you should avoid doing when you’re using Twitter?

After 2 months of continuously using Twitter, and after reaching 5,000 followers, for which I am very grateful, I decided to share my Twitter experience and squeeze what I learned into 25 pieces of advice that every Twitter tweep could benefit from in his/her search for the ultimate Twitter experience!

The List of To Dos:

  1. Say your thanks: As prayers are important in life, “thank you” mentions are as  important on Twitter!
  2. Send out love and smiles: You might think it’s lame, but gathering a group of people who bring  a smile to your face, through their tweets, and sending them a smile every once in a while makes a huge difference.
  3. Greet Your Fellow Tweeps: – with “good morning” and “good night” messages as often as you can, let people feel that you do care to greet them and not just advertise to them! JohnLusher is a great example of caring tweeps.

Startups Craving to be Acquired… A Big Mistake?

While skimming through the news, I came across “Are Silicon Valley Startups More likely to be Acquired” on TechCrunch. I took my time, read through the article as well as some of the many comments listed beneath it, and to my surprise, I was stunned to come up with some vital points of argument that were not even touched upon!

A Google Acquisitions Department Comic (click to enlarge)

A Google Acquisitions Department Comic (click to enlarge) - by Oliver Widder

Now, as the article clearly states, if you are a Silicon Valley startup, you have a better chance of being bought out. But why is being acquired such a good thing? Doesn’t it mean that you have created something that someone else can utilize, operate and master better than you? Doesn’t this mean that you gave up on your own creation? Is acquisition always the best deal for startups?

Granted, there are factors to consider and reconsider here:

  • The Financial Benefits: I can’t possibly deny the financial benefits startup owners would gain if their was to be acquired but the way I see it, a company can, on a long-term basis, make even more sustainable and continuous profits if it is able to maintain its image and grow its user base or community. Notice Zuckerberg’s bold refusal to be acquired by Yahoo for $1 billion – now it is evaluated at $15 billion!
  • The Potential Growth: Yes, being acquired by a giant such as Google for example, will probably allow for the startup to gain more recognition and in return attract more customers yet, the question remains to be: “who is getting the credit?”, not those who worked hard to grow an idea into a company on its road to a possible success!
  • The Employment Opportunities: It is highly possible that an acquired Silicon Valley startup will provide employment opportunities to its previous owners but I’d have to argue against that as well! Why work for others in a company that you have launched? Take GrandCentral for example, which was acquired in 2007,  and whose founders, Craig Walker and Vincent Paquet, are now employees at Google with high level salaries. Why not be the owners of GrandCentral and keep all the profit?

Finally, here’s something I’d like you to consider, Google started as a startup and was not acquired but look where it is now. So are new startups starting off on the wrong foot when building their “vision” around being acquired? And why run to be acquired, if ex-googlers are going backwards and opening up their own startups?
