Social Media: Might be the Devil, but it’s not the Reaper!

“Despite all the negative publicity about social media in relation to privacy related issues, intrusive advertising and safety problems, recently, I am developing this feeling that social media is currently specializing in creating opportunities to save lives more than take them!”

Therefore, the questions we should be asking ourselves are: Is social media the devil and not the reaper? Does its overall positives outweigh its negatives? Should we take a step back and try, for once, to give social media a break?

The Devil Is Not All Bad!

Is Social Media the Devil?

Have you ever seen any episode of Reaper? A great show, a bit too imaginary, yet the fight between good and evil is quite enjoyable I must admit! Now, do you remember the devil who owns the boy’s soul? You must give him kudos for his sense of humor and his less than perfect tries to be good. I think the same thing applies to social media!

Whether you blame social media for the fact that your house was stolen, your PC was attacked by trojans or even the simple fact that you lost your spouse, you must admit that social media use has its perks and advantages, especially when it comes to the humanitarian side of its utilization!

Social Media: A Savior?

While wasting some time playing Brain Buddies on Facebook, I decided to go check my wall to find the following status update by a friend of mine: ”

AB+ BLOOD NEEDED AT AUH in BEIRUT!!! FOR A 20 YR OLD GIRL, ROUBA BSAIBES, AND SHE NEEDS MORE THAN 30 UNITS OF BLOOD FOR HER SURGERY TOMORROW!! WE NEED YOUR HELP!!! PLZ CONTACT 03-424449 or 03-213454 17 minutes ago

As disturbing as this message might seem to you, it moved me to a point where I, for the first time, felt with Facebook and sympathized!

I didn’t stop there, I went to my friend’s profile and I saw that she has actually created a group for the same cause and was actively writing comments, answering questions and inviting people to the group!

This got me thinking: while we all might have encountered one or more problems while using social media, the truth of the matter remains to be that whether social media is our savior or the devil who will take us down solely depends on our use of it!

Moreover, and for those of you who are highly active readers of social media related news and stories, it will be easy for you to see the positive effects that social media can have on the humanitarian aspects of our lives! Whether it is a story about aiding to spread a good word about a cause, trying to protect our environment or elevating awareness about certain child or family related issues, social media proved to have the power to make a difference!

What Can We Do to Help?

Our hands are never tied when it comes to how we choose to deal with social media! We always have the power to steer its use in a direction which guarantees righteous outcomes rather than destructive ones !

Therefore, allow me to conclude this argument by asking you to help me spread the awareness about this topic: What do you think we can do to make use of social media positively? What are we doing wrong? And, finally, do you think that maybe one day, social media will be “the tool” for people to come together and live in peace?
