USA Today’s #AmericaWants Twitter Campaign — Learn Social Media By Example

USA Today

USA Today

USA Today is a national American daily newspaper published by the Gannett Company. It was founded by Al Neuharth. The newspaper vies with The Wall Street Journal for the position of having the widest circulation of any newspaper in the United States, something it previously held since 2003.

According to the Audit Bureau of Circulations, the paper has 1.9 million copies as of October 2009. USA Today remains the widest circulated print newspaper in the United States.

Idea & Objectives:

The #AmericaWants hashtag contest was conceived by Social Media strategist Alex Nicholson as part of USA Today’s larger “What America Wants” brand campaign, designed to illustrate USA Today’s connection with the American experience and readers’ engagement with the brand on multiple media platforms.

The charity that had the most retweets of the message “#AmericanWants [charity name] to get a full-page ad in USA TODAY” with its name in the tweet between Tuesday, April 13 and Friday, April 16 was declared the victor.

The “Like” Button: Facebook’s Covert Plan to Catalog The Web

Recently, small unassuming icons started popping up on various websites, little “like” buttons that are springing up next to movie titles on IMDB, a restaurant on Yelp or the hundreds of other products and services on the web with that button.

If that was all that Facebook was doing, then it wouldn’t really require the Zuckman to put a full on show with bells and whistles and all to announce this. This feature has been available for ages, whether through the Digg/Reddit or more recently the Twitter buttons. However, there are two things that make it quite the big deal.

Two things that makes this a big deal…

First of all, this new feature will allow Facebook to share your information which will in turn influence your experience on other sites. For example, if you have a tendency to ‘like’ spicy Mexican food then Yelp will “suddenly” develop a tendency to show you more Mexican restaurants. This is only one of the ways that this information might be used.

British General Election 2010 — Learn Social Media by Example

This year’s general election was certainly one of the toughest elections that Britain has seen in recent memory. It resulted with a win for David Cameron and the Tory’s who formed a coalition government with Nick Clegg’s Liberals. The election had many firsts, it was the first time that the candidates participated in an American style debate, and it was the first time that social media played a role in determining the result of the election.
