The world cup is certainly an unparalleled event in the world of sports, or the entire world for that matter. FIFA World Cup™ expects that 28 billion cumulative viewers will be watching the World Cup this year, that’s about 5 times more than the entire world population and certainly dwarfs the ratings of the of the Super Bowl.
This is also the first year that social media will play a central role in the coverage of the event and since this is the world’s most favorite sport, people have great expectations from the way social media sites will be utilized during this campaign.
Here, at Thoughtpick, we realize that there is an overwhelming amount of campaigns, apps, profiles, and pages dedicated to this event so we “thought” to dedicate this space to highlight the main ones that are going on right now.

Buzz: 1,194,000+ Fans
The Goal!Leaderboard application has the prospect of causing World Cup fans to go to war with each other. The application is based on the idea of finding out which of the 32 World Cup teams has the most passionate fans. People will express their support for their team by clicking the “like” button on it. Currently, Chile is leading the pack with 406,000+ with the Italians on their trail with 396,000+.

Visa is the World Cup official sponsor and this was their first FIFA themed app, and it certainly sets a high bar. The app aims at providing fans with an event planning tool so that they are able to schedule their events for the entire month. You will be able to create custom schedules, plan parties and events and even share them with your friends through Facebook.
The application is available in 4 different languages English, Japanese, Spanish and Portuguese and is customized for each of the 32 World Cup-qualifying countries.

Unters Paradise and Betfair teamed up together to create a very fan friendly Facebook site to keep all the fans updated with all the news about the World Cup and provide them the space to post pictures, review World Cup related issues and discuss to their hearts content everything World Cup.
Buzz: 350,000 Followers
ESPN brings its brand to World Cup coverage and this is, by far, one of the most polished pages on Facebook. The page allows fans to keep up with news, check scores and discuss the World Cup, but that’s not all.
ESPN create a few more features to sweeten deals. The Team Selector app will allow you to select which teams you are interested in following and it will update you of their news using a Facebook bookmark or on your email. The application also provides each team with their own app that includes their news, matches, scores photos, videos and even recipes from that country provided by Mario Batali!
Matches app which allows you to share each game as an event and see who, amongst your friends, are going to watch which games. Game Face app which allows you to use a photo and paint your face in support of your team and share with friends on Facebook, quite the amusing app I must say.
So, which app/fanpage is your favorite? Are you excited about the World Cup? Share with us your passion for the event here on Thoughtpick.
