Quirky News of the Web — September 2010

Previous quirky news posts: JanuaryFebruaryMarchApril MayJuneJuly August September

There are always smaller headlines that tend to go unnoticed. They are the headlines that let us know how individualistic and unique some of the interactions on the web can be, and how much social media is shaping our world in ways that we could not have fathomed 20 years ago.

Therefore, the Quirky News of the Web section will be dedicated to those pieces of news that might go unnoticed but still pack quite the punch.

The Revenge of the Beiber — Maniacs

It was as ground breaking as learning that Justin Beiber is not a virgin, the 16-year old heartthrob shattered the hearts of his legions of fans by being caught making out in the back-seat with his tour-mate Jasmine Villegas. The beibermaniacs jealousy meter skyrocketed and they quickly hit Twitter and made #getsomejustin a trending topic in which they teased and mocking the star for “gettin’ some“.  Things got so bad to the extent that his agent tried to step in for a little damage control. But finally it was Justin who managed to pull a quick one on his fans recapturing their hearts by kissing another girl, you go playa!

Insecure Narcissists

Facebook, Facebook and my wall who’s the fairest of them all.” Nothing feeds the narcissistic bowls of insecurity like an unhealthy dose of Facebook profile refresh. According to a new study, there is a positive correlation between the number of times a person checks their Facebook profile and their scores on narcissism and insecurity tests. Apparently, Facebook addicts are just hungry for any praise and recognition they can get but the way they do it is different across the sexes. Men tend to gloat through writing, while women preferred to do it using their profile pics, with 500 million users, that might be the mother of all generalizations!

Copy Right Your Name

Who Do You Think You Are?

It’s one thing for the RIAA to hound bloggers over copyright infringements, it’s a completely different thing when a person is hounding them of the right to use their name. While this is an amusing case of someone being confused by copyright and trade mark laws, it is still pretty annoying to deal with. Hence, I will not include that person’s name, picture or whatever else she claims to own but I’ll share a couple of thoughts that popped into my head after reading it. The first one was me wondering what would happen if a kid was born carrying her same exact name, would she sue? And what is that God awful Javascript she got on her website, is she still stuck in ’99?

I’ll Pay You to Play With Me

Where's Your Joy Stick?

It is well known that mythical status of a gamer chick in the world of the nerd, for it is the ever elusive accolade that many nerds and gamers fail miserably at achieving but despair no more for GameCrush is here. Gamecrush is a basically a service that allows male gamers on Xbox Live to pay girls – 60 cents a minute – to go on a “PlayDate”, and dates are encouraged to woo the gamers into tipping them with points which they can redeem for cash creating an incentive for dates to do more than just “play games”. If you ask me, it’s just a 21st century’s take on a hot-line.

Make Love Not Mafia Wars

Say Hello To My Lil' Friend

It is truly astonishing some of the places that people find love. In a heart warming tale of digital love, John Sweeney and Joanne Doane were united in holy matrimony. The couple met on a Mafia Wars Clan in March 2009, and after some intra-clan warring, the couple’s relationship grew stronger until it bloomed into a true Mafia War’s alliance of love. The Mafia don’s celebrated the occasions by handing out toy water guns and knives to attendees allowing them to express themselves in true Mafia Wars fashion. Zynga was so touched by the news of bringing the couple together that they sending them of a Honeymoon of their choice as wedding gift.
