5 Great Facebook Contest Ideas

Social Media Campaign Stat Box

FYI : According to Facebook Promotions Guidelines all contests need to be administered through 3rd party apps.

Sometimes, all you need to increase the level of interaction on your Facebook Page is to sweeten the deal a bit with a little contest. This will not only give people a reason to keep on checking your page, but it will also increase the exposure of your brand and excite new brand fans of to join your page. Here are some contest ideas that you can refer to for inspiration.

The “Tag” Marketing

Simply post a picture of your product or your brand on a weekly or monthly bases and ask your fans to tag themselves in various parts of the picture for a chance to win either the items tagged or some other prize. IKEA was probably one of the first brands to leverage this technique effectively and it was a great hit with their fans.

Scavenger Hunt

While a scavenger hunt might be a bit more taxing on the contestants, its benefit is that it forces contestants to check your information a bit more in-depth. You can create a scavenger hunt on Facebook by laying out a trail of clues that might stretch over from your social media presence into your website or even Google maps. Buick is about to run another contest in their series of city focused scavenger hunts, which have been very successful in the past.

A “Submit Your Picture” Competition

This one can be held in various ways; you could ask you fans to submit their photos with your products, or ask them to submit their photos according to a certain theme, or just submit their photos for the heck of it and, in general, the response is a flood of pictures. Recently, Citroen UK asked their fans to submit their photos to convey three emoticons; :) :( and :S.

I must say that I like the Scavenger Hunt method the most. I think it is the least intrusive and the most fun out of all the list!

I believe it’s against Facebook policy to use Facebook functionality as a fundamental part of your competitions now, which basically negates all the above… what are your thoughts on this?

You’d need to check very carefully that your contest doesn’t contravene the facebook regulations for promotions and i believe some of these suggestions would contravene them. You can read the regulations at http://www.facebook.com/promotions_guidelines.php

The last two recommendations you made are in violation of facebook promotional guidelines. It’d be good to pay those some attention before influencing others in the wrong direction. Although some of the ideas are good, there aren’t a specific “type” of contests that you can run on facebook.

Running digital campaigns is about finding an offline “experience” and making it effectively relate-able online. Simple ideas often translate into digital in the most beautiful of ways.

True but then again all those ideas are really not mine, those are just a sample of some of the campaigns that are going on right now and you can click on the images posted to see them. the purpose of this post is just to give people an idea about what kind of contest people are holding on their facebook pages.
as for the facebook guidelines, look a the comment below.

sorry for the late replies. I apologize for the over site but I was covering competitions that were going on at the time, and all the ideas were included as is, but it’s true that some of the ideas won’t play well with the Facebook promotions guidelines unless they are administered through a 3rd party app or possibly through iFrames..

If you are looking for a legit photo contest app, you can get ours :)
    http://www.rainbowcreatures.com – it’s a download so you don’t need to
pay any fees per day etc. If you manage fan pages of someone else you
can even get our B2B platform to resell contests while adding your own
unique value (design or contest management). Companies using our
platform in the past included PizzaHut Middle East, SAY Media and many
others. Of course it’s created according to FB TOS (both promotional and
    general).

It’s a cop out to say that you are featuring them because other people are doing them. If you are holding them up as examples, you should make sure they follow the rules. Otherwise, they aren’t good examples.

I want to try to create an online Scavenger Hunt for my friends before the year ends. For me, it’s just like burying a treasure and letting my friends hunt for it. I find that particularly exciting.

the first recommendation “tag marketing” is in violation too. is there a 3rd party app that allows tagging of friends or oneself on whatever picture the brand would like to post up?

  • http://www.socialaliens.com/ Buy Facebook Fans

Definitely Facebook (Like Pages and Communities) are the first and
foremost platform to get as many users as good your campaigns is
running. Although you need to set up blogs first for engaging your users
with you because when you provide information then they could take
interest in your business and i believe SocialAliens(dot)com most
trustable place to buy Real Targeted Facebook fans.
