Is Social Media Pushing TV to its Grave?

Television is dying,” Jay Leno…

How is social media affecting the old, traditional yet long-loved media channel: the television? Is social media slowly pushing television to its grave? How is social media able to encourage less television viewing and promote more Internet usage simultaneously?

Personally Speaking…

television-is-dead

Television dead?

Allow me to begin this post by presenting you with a short personal experience of mine which will, in turn, help you realize how I thought about this topic and where my ideas are coming from in addition to where they are headed!

I have been a mildly heavy Internet user for the past two years or so. A year ago, my interests in reading, writing and going out started changing: I started spending more time on Facebook and less time for going out and seeing friends. Since March 2009, I think I became an “Internet addict”, replacing most outings and TV time with Internet use, especially social media related sites and channels! I can recall that the last time I actually sat down and watched anything on TV was late March of this year!

With this little story in mind, let’s take a deeper look on how social media is discretely replacing the role of our beloved television!

Does More Social Media = Shorter Product & Service Life Cycle?

Is the relationship between the life cycle of products and services inversely related to the use of social media? How does social media influence the perceptions and even usage of products and services, especially when it comes to the trendy, fashionable and high tech ones?

We’ve Heard it All!

Throughout the past 2 years or so, we have heard almost everything related to social media and how it plays a role on almost every stage of its users’ lives! Whether it be how social media could kill us, its effect on our mental health or how its use can positively or negatively effect an enterprise, social media has been taking the lead amongst all online related news!

But, from a marketing point of view, and after seeing how social media is able to highly spread or deeply bury a marketing/promotional campaign, one must take a moment to think: How does social media affect the life cycle of all those products and services it touches?

The Past… The Present…

Beware Products & Services!

Beware Products & Services!

Scientifically, it is well known that “an inverse or negative relationship is a mathematical relationship in which one variable, say y, decreases as another, say x, increases”. When applying this to my topic of discussion, if y is social media use and x is product/service life cycle would mean the more the social media use increases the shorter the life cycle!

But the question is: Why?

It is very simple: sometimes what is more is less! (My favorite example here is salt: a great addition to food yet when heavily used it could cause serious health problems!)

Long before social media ever emerged, even more so, way back when the Internet was just a distant concept, I truly believe that products and services used to live longer.

Allow me to further explain by sharing with you my reasoning for such a rationalization:

Yahoo! “to Take on Twitter”: Beyond Far-fetched!

Is it really “wise” to try to take on well-established services or platforms by imitating them? Does the fact that a company has a high market share in a certain field automatically translate into its a guaranteed success in other fields? What is happening to product/service specialization? And why is everyone is trying to be involved in everything?

Social Media Accused of Turning Users to Targets… Who’s to Blame?

Is it always fair to blame others for our mistakes? Since the introduction of Web 2.0, why is social media being held responsible for almost every little thing that goes wrong in our lives? To what extent is our ignorance and negligence playing a role in making us targets to different types of undesirable situations, such as theft and so on?
