FAIL: ‘Hack is Wack’ Video Contest — Learn Social Media by Example

Symantec is certainly a power house when it comes to anti-virus and security solutions and it is one of the top brands in the business but when it comes to its marketing initiatives let us just say that they are lackluster to say the least. Their latest surely has been born after an extended “brain storming session” between their marketing managers and hip-hop superstar, Snoop Dogg!

What is it about?

In this a very odd marriage, the contest aims at encouraging people to upload videos of them rapping and rhyming about hacking, identity theft and computer viruses to raise awareness about cybercrime.

The contest is centered around the www.hackiswack.com website asking participants to upload their 2 minute anti-cybercrime raps for a chance to win a couple of tickets to his show, a chance to meet his management, and fully decked out Toshiba laptop.

What is Wack?

Now pinch yourself for you are not dreaming. The entire websites is decked to teeth with a faux gangster aura that really makes you questions the sanity of the people who green-lighted the project. The horrendous gangster-rap-album-of-the-90’s font featuring the wild-wild-west-wanted fonts used against a yellow background so bright that I wouldn’t advise you to view the website without your sunglasses is, simply put, a big middle finger to any self respecting designer.

FIFA Superstar

What They Did:

EA Sports FIFA Superstars was developed in a way to attract football fans to play by themselves and share their scores and achievements. More importantly, they also focused on the social media side of the equation by allowing, and even
encouraging, their users to challenge friends:

SCVNGR: Earn Your Right to Be Vain

There is something lackluster about social check-in apps like FourSquare, Gowalla and Facebook Places. Whenever I tried to use or checkout one of those services, I was always thinking about how letting my friends know where I’ve been is not exciting enough for me to use it. This impression of those websites not providing me with a lot of incentive to maintain my accounts but a new service has popped up and it seems particularly intriguing with its marriage of social media and gaming; SCVNGR.

What If The Internet Was Our World And Social Media Sites Our Countries?

Looking over numbers and statistic for social networking can get confusing pretty easily, whether its keeping up with the number of users on each social media network or the new ones that are popping everyday. So that’s why the people at Flowtown decide to something about it by creating this infograph that represent the 2010 social media scene that pays homage to XKCD map of online communities.

Catfish: A Social Networking Movie Worth Watching

Filmmakers Ariel Schulman and Henry Joost sensed a story and decided to document a budding friendship between Ariel's brother Nev,a 24 year old photographer from New York City, with Abby (8 years old) and her sister Megan (19 years old) from rural Michigan. The story starts with Abby contacting Nev via Facebook, asking for his permission...
