Jib Jab — Applications Using Social Media Brilliantly

Welcome to another episode of Thoughtpick’s series of articles: Apps Using SM Brilliantly. We will again be looking into examples of tricks and methods that online games and applications are using to make the most of social media. In other words, what is making those apps as “spreadable” and “viral” as they are.

Today’s application is: Jib Jab.

The Application:

JibJab

Founded in 1999, way before social media times, Jib Jab was simply an application to create customized e-cards, videos, images and so on. Jib Jab offers you a chance to easily spend a few hours there creating funny videos and pictures and laughing your a** off when they are ready!

Now, and through excellent utilization of social media, the application has 599,453 monthly active users on Facebook and 149,116 people like it!

Colbert Report on Social Media: Control-Self-Delete Your Future!

In one of his latest shows on Comedy Central, Stephen Colbert uses his “The Word” segment to express a serious yet hilarious view of  today’s social media environment.

He cunningly points out the dangers of using social media in terms of privacy while showing how big social media giants such as Facebook are selling our information to the “highest bidder.

Enjoy The Colbert Report on social media below, in addition a few of my favorite quotes taken from the video:

  • The Internet is one giant resume“!
  • You see, social media is the only way to reach young people these days without giving your abs a nickname!
  • Once you are a disfigured, nameless loner, you will be the ideal candidate”!

Finally, I wonder: Are people taking the consequences of social media seriously? And what extreme measures should be drawn in order to protect ourselves from reaching to a stage where we need to change our names just to find a job?

Looking forward to your comments down below…

The Game Layer on Top of The World [TED Video]

This was a really amazing TED lecture that I thought about sharing, the possibilities that open up in your mind, after listening to this lecture, are truly amazing. The concept is very simple: the evolution of social networking has reached its apex and settled on a platform; Facebook. Now, the way forward would be to [...]

Sesh Roulette, the quickest way to catch a case

Twitter Mood

Here is an interesting video depicting how the mood for US tweeps changes across the span of a work day. The map is morphed to depict the number of tweeps from each state rather than the area in what is called a cartogram. It might that surprising that most people are at their lowest during their midday or midweek or that the west...

Facebook’s New “Check-In” Service: An Illusion of Utopia?

I honestly think that we need to fully understand the repercussions of such services before engaging in using them. Remember life without social media: When the mistakes you did were merely stored in pictures on your PC? With a service such as this one, we are now entering a new level of fear, haunting and paranoia!
