Ikea’s Social Marketing Genius

Watch that movie and weep. It’s not sappy of course, but its so simply brilliant it’s almost hard to bare. Ikea practically invents Facebook tag marketing.

How? They use the photo tagging function where users were able to tag objects in photos of Ikea showrooms with their own names to win these very products. What they managed to do is: advertise their products socially, spread the love, and involve people in conversations.

This campaign was done by Forsman and Bodenfors, who have been working with Ikea since 1996. This is their first social media campaign.

“The Future Internet: Service Web 3.0″ [video]

Information is a source of learning. But unless it is organized, processed, and available to the right people in a format for decision making, it is a burden, not a benefit.” William Pollard. I agree and I’m sure that most of you do as well!

Take a look at the following video; my analysis will follow right after.

After viewing the video and reading the quote above , I am only inclined to think about the following issues with rather serious concerns and heavy hesitations: Is it wise to push for information to be handled solely by machines speaking to each other with minimum human interference? What is the degree to which privacy is compromised when utilizing semantic technologies? And do we have enough backup capacities to secure information in case of electricity cuts or natural disasters?

What do you think?

Dell vs. Toshiba – Death Match via Youtube, Facebook & Twitter…

Is social media turning into one of the main reasons for purchasing trendy, fashionable and tech products these days? Could a brand’s wrong utilization of social media affect its image negatively? Is it fair to solely depend on web marketing and social media channels (such as Youtube, Twitter and Facebook) in order to decide whether to purchase a certain brand or its competitor?

A month or more ago, I published an article about Blackberry Storm vs. iPhone 3G. I noticed that our readers really enjoyed this type of topics. Therefore, the ThoughtPick team, and after an idea-loaded brainstorming session, decided to turn this type of posts into a series: Social Media & Web Marketing Wars!

A Little Bit of History…

Before moving on to evaluating the effectiveness of their social media utilization, it is only fair to talk a little about Dell and Toshiba’s histories.

Let’s begin with Dell. Dell was established in 1984 by Michael Dell and it employs more than 76,500 people worldwide as of 2009. “Dell grew during the 1980s and 1990s to become (for a time) the largest seller of PCs and servers. As of 2008 it held the second spot in computer-sales within the industry behind Hewlett-Packard. The company currently sells personal computers, servers, data storage devices, network switches, software, and computer peripherals”.

As for Toshiba, it was founded by the merging of two companies in 1939. Toshiba America Information Systems was created in 1989. “Toshiba is the world’s fifth largest personal computer manufacturer, after Hewlett-Packard and Dell of the U.S., Acer of Taiwan and Lenovo of China.

Dell & Toshiba… “Social Medially”!

As a crucial part of my research, I made an effort to cover 4 important aspects of Dell and Toshiba’s online presence, especially when it comes to social media platforms: Twitter, Youtube, Facebook and Blogs.

1. Twitter:

What does Dell conduct itself on Twitter?

Dell seems to very well understand the power that Twitter is able to equip it with and appears to be doing the most it can to reap the benefits of having a strong presence as a Twitter user:

Twitter for Enterprise Debate: Would You Use It For Your Own Business?

We were in the middle of our weekly meeting, conducting the customary brainstorming exercises and, as usual, discussing ideas and topics; how good they are and which directions we can take them and so on. Beirut and Fadi seemed to have 2 completely different opinions regarding Twitter and its usefulness for businesses vs. its disadvantages. We decided to write this “duet” article and in turn listen to our readers opinions.

1,2,3…. Debate!

Let the debate begin!

Let the debate begin!

Fadi’s Opinion – Pro Twitter for Enterprise

While Twitter, like any other available tool at work – be it telephone, email, or even internet access – can be abused if not used the right way, it can also provide many benefits and open new opportunities to any businesses. Don’t blame the tool, blame people who abuse it.

There are many ways where Twitter can benefit your business. The following are my favorite top 5:

  1. Motivation: The more motivated your employees are, the more productive they can be. People have several motivating factors. I, myself, totally support the opinion that says socializing is the primary motivating factor. Wrap the social aspect of Twitter in your business constraints and you will have a winning formula for motivated employees.
  2. Marketing: Twitter is a great tool to interact with your customers and market your services and products. Dell earned $3 Million from Twitter when they started posting exclusive coupons and offers about new products on their Twitter account (@DellOutlet).  Coffe Groundz, a Houston independent coffee shop, gained much success by giving their customers the option to order via Twitter (@coffeegroundz)! That was a precedence – a very successful one.

  3. Listening: One of the most important characteristic of a successful business is to be able to figure out what its customers need and improve its offering of products/services accordingly. Twitter provides a great way for a business to listen to related people’s conversations. Tasti D-Lite, a popular New York dessert franchise, was there to listen to people working at the Empire State Building who twittered about their craving for ice cream delivery (@tastidlite) – it opened a new business opportunity to them. Social Media & NGOs: Crossing Boundaries & Building Bridges!

Can social media help Non-Governmental Organizations achieve their humane goals and reach their charitable objectives? How could social media be utilized efficiently and effectively in order to promote noble causes and humanitarian concerns? Could social media negatively harm the messages that NGOs try to spread throughout the world?

A Brief Introduction

In one of my recent posts, I discussed, in details, my thoughts about the great power that social media possesses in addition to my sincere faith that it has the ability to pave the path for world peace. The thought reoccurred to me yesterday in a rather different face and form: the power social media has to cross boundaries and build bridges especially in relation to the humanitarian causes that hundreds of NGOs peruse.

After the usual extensive research cycle every idea of mine needs to go through, I found myself able to list a hundred reasons why social media should be embraced by NGOs and how it could highly be benefited from in order to harness collective collaboration and bring about change.

Social Media & It’s Power…

We all know, for a fact, that the “new web” has transformed the way people interact and even the way they think! We also realize how social media platforms are now occupying a vital portion of many organizational and business strategies at different levels. Day by day, the need for utilizing these technologies for non profits is becoming more evident.

Social media platforms seem to have the ability to help NGOs through various ways, namely:

  • Providing various strategic tools for engagement.
  • Creating a means for building relationships with stakeholders and communities.
  • Promoting networking and fundraising.
  • Facilitating campaigning to a large, and sometimes even targeted, audience.
  • Allowing for more space to spread the word at a cheaper cost.
  • Reaching younger generations and having higher chances of getting them involved.
  • Transparently telling a story through sound and visuals.

Do Larger Social Media Channels Always Have the Upper Hand?

What are the advantages and disadvantages of small scale communities vs. larger more popular ones? Is bigger always better? How does communication differ amongst larger social media channels as opposed to smaller yet more specialized ones?

Come to think about it, it’s true what they say: “sometimes less is more“! Allow me to further explain.

During our ordinary lives, we are always faced with situations that make us wonder: Do we really need many friends or just a few true close ones? Do we need fame or simply a good reputation? Do we need many meals a day or only a few healthy ones? This applies to everything we do offline and online as well!

Earlier on this week, while doing some usual research on the web, I came across the video sharing channel, Vimeo, which is very much similar to Youtube yet on a smaller scale. The first idea that popped to my mind was trying to figure out the reasons why Vimeo is not as popular as Youtube, treating the situation as a problem. After some research, I was able to find out that maybe, just maybe, this smaller number of users is there for a reason: specialization! Although Vimeo and Youtube have a lot in common, Vimeo’s competitive edge probably lies in its ability to create a more intact and integrated chain of users who make up communities that know each other by face and name and who interact with each other on a more personal level than any large social media channel can possibly provide!

But the buck doesn’t stop there!

There are many other social media channels for which this theory can perfectly apply, namely: the infamous social bookmarking sites Reddit and Mixx vs. Digg.

Got 69 points and 25 comments on Mixx, but not even noticed on Mixx!

Got 69 points and 25 comments on Mixx, but not even noticed on Digg!

Let me break it down to you in simple points to bullet-proof my argument…

Karma-lization! The Pros & Cons…

The concept of karma was first originated in India to describe a relationship of cause and effect; “the effects of all deeds are viewed as actively shaping past, present, and future experiences“. Hundreds of years later, the social media karma idea emerged heavily relying on the same traditional trend that goes: “Do onto others as you would do to yourself.”

karma

What goes around comes back around!

In a vast virtual world where each of the online users aim to seek recognition, be known, be heard, and be “someone” who people desire to be associated with, karma seems to be a fine defining ground of online intentions! Karma comes across as having the power to add balance to online relationships and differentiate between spammers, heavy advertisers, blabbers, time-wasters and those individuals who are really looking forward to make a change, invite others into their world and make them a part of it while being a part of theirs as well.

In life, there is always give and take! Karma ensures, to some extent, that this kind of relationship exists and persists between the members of social media communities therefore, good karma can only be earned by dedicating free time to positive community activities such as: [read full article >>]

Social Network Brainwashing! Be Vewy Vewy Caweful!

Are we gradually metamorphosing into brainwashed entities probing social networks to find a place where we can belong? Are we now the new breed of social networking junkies too blinded by our addiction that we are unable to see the intangible threads of silk wrapping us into the “web”? How and when did our lives start revolving around who did what, where and when and with whom? And how are we becoming more miserable, by the day, when we focus our lives around other people’s successes, relationships, status feeds and latest photo albums?

Allow me to point you towards the direction of the hidden truth that I’ve been unveiling through my latest research endeavor!

Do you remember the LooneyTunes character: Elmer Fudd? Well I certainly do! What reminds me of him most, apart from his inability to pronounce the letter “r”, is his obsession with Bugs Bunny! How he ran around all day, stalking him and getting into so much trouble just to catch him and yet he never did and his entire trauma was futile!

Come to think of it now, social networking could be exactly the same in certain aspects!

Whether we spend hours using our social network platform as an excuse to tail gossip stories about those we know or just as a path to find solutions to emotional or even physical insecurities, social networking seems to be crawling into our minds trying to steer us into believing that it might be the only hope left for many of us!

I believe otherwise: I think it is the cause rather than the cure! Here is why…

One of the “Great Ways to Make Yourself Absolutely Miserable” is through comparing everything you do to the lives and achievements of others and feeling bad about yourself for how happier, more successful and better looking they are than you. Social networking gladly offers you that option!

Within the same line of thought, allow me to ask you a couple of questions, and please feel free to share your answers or just ponder upon them: How easy is it now to stalk your ex boyfriend or girlfriend using Facebook for example? Wasn’t breaking up in “the good old days” more convenient? I mean seriously, a few calls here and there, a message every once in a while but that was mainly it! Now, with all the access you can have to every single detail of other people’s private lives, you are cursed with having the power to snoop around your ex’s profile, see his new pictures with the cute girl he’s been dating and you have all the excuses you need to make “getting over him” a mission impossible!

But that’s not just it!

I have recently finished reading a very disturbing article entitled: “Facebook can ruin your life. And so can MySpace and Bebo”. In this article you are able to see how, in addition to the usual daily miseries brought on by social networking, social networking can also cause you to lose your job, taint your reputation through imprisonment or even, in some extreme cases, sign your death sentence all in the name of “staying connected”!

To sum up my argument, I must admit that I believe that the social networking brainwashing cycle is endless and that there are numerous other discrete examples out there if we only look closer!

But I’ll leave you with something to think about: Is social network platform hypnotization the new clinical therapy or is it the new decade’s plague?
