Apple’s Ping: Taking a Big Bite of the Social Media Cake?

Ping destroys whatever was left of MySpace’s market share,” said Xeni Jardin, co editor of the technology blog Boing Boing. “It remains to be seen what kind of competition it poses for Facebook.” ~ BBC

Having set shop in the technology department through the MP3 player, the mobile phone and the computer tablet markets with the iPod, iPhone and iPad devices respectively, Apple just recently announced its latest expansion – into social media – with Ping.

Apple's Ping

Ping is to be integrated into Apple’s latest iTunes software update and will enable users, or “Pingers”, to do the following:

  1. Follow friends and others.
  2. Build networks of friends and professional musicians.
  3. Create playlists based on what your friends are listening to.
  4. See music related information including what music your ping friends are buying and what concerts they’re attending.

Furthermore, Ping will be accessible through iTunes, 10 software on Macs and PCs as well as through the iTunes application on iPhones and the iPod Touch.

It seems that MySpace is in for a surprise! This smart yet unanticipated step by Apple might as well be the last straw that will break MySpace’s back!

What do you think: Will Ping be a huge success as is being predicted? Do you believe that Ping is able to substitute MySpace once and for all?

Colbert Report on Social Media: Control-Self-Delete Your Future!

In one of his latest shows on Comedy Central, Stephen Colbert uses his “The Word” segment to express a serious yet hilarious view of  today’s social media environment.

He cunningly points out the dangers of using social media in terms of privacy while showing how big social media giants such as Facebook are selling our information to the “highest bidder.

Enjoy The Colbert Report on social media below, in addition a few of my favorite quotes taken from the video:

  • The Internet is one giant resume“!
  • You see, social media is the only way to reach young people these days without giving your abs a nickname!
  • Once you are a disfigured, nameless loner, you will be the ideal candidate”!

Finally, I wonder: Are people taking the consequences of social media seriously? And what extreme measures should be drawn in order to protect ourselves from reaching to a stage where we need to change our names just to find a job?
