10 Tips to Ensure That You’re NOT A Social Media Sucker!

Learn all you can from the mistakes of others.  You won’t have time to make them all yourself“.  ~Alfred Sheinwold

Mistake

If only we, for once, actually took the time to understand the value of this quote, most of us wouldn’t have gone through most of the crap we had to deal with, whether on a personal level or business wise! But we are humans and we are stubborn!

My mother knew better than to try to teach me from her mistakes, however, I still have faith in you, my readers, and in the fact that you will trust me enough to learn from my own experience on social media venues as to not commit the same mistakes I did!

Top 10 Tips You Should Follow When Using Social Media!

Are you ready for this? Here we go..

1. Culturize!

Being culturally aware and sensitive is very important when using one or multiple social media platforms or venues. Cultural ignorance is highly destructive in your relationships with the communities you are trying to be a part of!

2. Emphasize!

When active inside a realm as impersonal as social media, it is very important for you to be able to emphasize any point you are trying to make in order not to be misunderstood. No one can hear the tone of your voice or see your body language so your words are your weapon and your executor!

10 Tips on Reinventing Yourself through Social Media!

Many of us crucify ourselves between two thieves – regret for the past and fear of the future.” Fulton Oursler

Regret hurts!

Regret hurts!

How many times did you find yourself wondering what could have happened if only you did something differently or if you had decided not to take that dreadful trip, date that particular guy or even say those words to a friend? I’m sure the times were many and the situations where regret invaded you were many as well!

Therefore, and because I, personally, hate the word regret and its implications, I have found a way to help you get rid of part of your regrets and reinvent yourself. The key is: social media!

A Peak into My Train of Thoughts…

About a year ago, I was able to find a classmate of mine through Facebook. This guy was one of the meanest the school has ever witnessed! I remember when he used to make fun of me at school and how bad it made me feel. Through Facebook, he got my e-mail, added me to msn and contacted me for a job.

I remember than incident clearly, as if it happened yesterday…

When I met this guy, I felt all sorts of negative emotions that one could imagine: fear, pain, anger, rejection and so on. Yet, after a long talk, I was able to see things clearer and erase the bad memory of this bully, which had haunted me for years.

I regretted the years I spent feeling sorry for myself! And here’s where social media comes in…

Not only does social media provide a place for sharing valuable content, it also has the power to heal you and help you reinvent yourself . Here are the top 10 Tips on Reinventing Yourself through Social Media:

1. Expanding Your Horizons:

Through social media, you have the power to expand your horizons through acquiring knowledge about various topics of interest to you and to the world around you. Being exposed to too much information never killed anyone, right?

Dell vs. Toshiba – Death Match via Youtube, Facebook & Twitter…

Is social media turning into one of the main reasons for purchasing trendy, fashionable and tech products these days? Could a brand’s wrong utilization of social media affect its image negatively? Is it fair to solely depend on web marketing and social media channels (such as Youtube, Twitter and Facebook) in order to decide whether to purchase a certain brand or its competitor?

A month or more ago, I published an article about Blackberry Storm vs. iPhone 3G. I noticed that our readers really enjoyed this type of topics. Therefore, the ThoughtPick team, and after an idea-loaded brainstorming session, decided to turn this type of posts into a series: Social Media & Web Marketing Wars!

A Little Bit of History…

Before moving on to evaluating the effectiveness of their social media utilization, it is only fair to talk a little about Dell and Toshiba’s histories.

Let’s begin with Dell. Dell was established in 1984 by Michael Dell and it employs more than 76,500 people worldwide as of 2009. “Dell grew during the 1980s and 1990s to become (for a time) the largest seller of PCs and servers. As of 2008 it held the second spot in computer-sales within the industry behind Hewlett-Packard. The company currently sells personal computers, servers, data storage devices, network switches, software, and computer peripherals”.

As for Toshiba, it was founded by the merging of two companies in 1939. Toshiba America Information Systems was created in 1989. “Toshiba is the world’s fifth largest personal computer manufacturer, after Hewlett-Packard and Dell of the U.S., Acer of Taiwan and Lenovo of China.

Dell & Toshiba… “Social Medially”!

As a crucial part of my research, I made an effort to cover 4 important aspects of Dell and Toshiba’s online presence, especially when it comes to social media platforms: Twitter, Youtube, Facebook and Blogs.

1. Twitter:

What does Dell conduct itself on Twitter?

Dell seems to very well understand the power that Twitter is able to equip it with and appears to be doing the most it can to reap the benefits of having a strong presence as a Twitter user:

Top 10 Web Startup Business Screwups!

Why do many new web startups, with great ideas, valuable assets and deep motivation, fail? What are the major mistakes startups commit leading them to failure? What can be done to prolong the life of a startup rather than bring its business life to a guaranteed end?

It’s sad: the percentage of failed startups. It’s almost depressing! Even years ago, going back to the 90’s, it seems that startups have been failing continuously yet more discretely since social media channels and Web 2.0 were not in play!

A Table of Web Companies that Vanished!

A Table of Web Companies that Vanished!

Now many of you out there will think: why should I consider opening my own startup when there’s a 50-50% chance that it’s going to fail? Why not just apply for a stable company and settle for being an employee with a steady income? I beg to differ, the remaining successful 50% could be perceived positively! What failing startups lacked is the ability to learn from the mistakes of the many others! Yet now, with the abundant availability of failure stories, both online and offline, it has become easier to learn from the mistakes of others and try hard to avoid them.

So here’s what I’m going to do for this particular post: I’m going to choose a list of startups that failed and point out their mistakes clearly, explaining how they could be avoided in future ventures.

  1. Simplicity Does Not Substitute for Functionality!
    • AlmondRocks (as we were able to conclude from the little resources we found) created blogs that were too simple that they were actually useless!
  2. Don’t Underestimate Competition:
    • TinFinger Took their competition, Wikipedia – one of the top ten websites worldwide- lightly. They also concentrated on the technical side of the interface (RDF triples and semantic web) rather than the friendliness of the user experience.
    • Feedster, a search engine which seems to have been resurrected then killed again, is yet another example of underestimating competition, in this case: Google! [read full article >>]

After 2 months of continuously using Twitter, and after reaching 5,000 followers, for which I am very grateful, I decided to share my Twitter experience and squeeze what I learned into 25 pieces of advice that every Twitter tweep could benefit from in his/her search for the ultimate Twitter experience!

The List of To Dos:

  1. Say your thanks: As prayers are important in life, “thank you” mentions are as  important on Twitter!
  2. Send out love and smiles: You might think it’s lame, but gathering a group of people who bring  a smile to your face, through their tweets, and sending them a smile every once in a while makes a huge difference.
  3. Greet Your Fellow Tweeps: – with “good morning” and “good night” messages as often as you can, let people feel that you do care to greet them and not just advertise to them! JohnLusher is a great example of caring tweeps.

'Innocent' crimes a Blogger can commit :) ... Thanks to "Call thedoctor" of Flickr

As I have promised you in my previous post, here is a one stop read of the top 7 mistakes that bloggers and site owners fall into after creating original and unique pages:

  1. Neglect: Many Internet users are time-poor, I know, yet after creating original and creative sites, whether in content and/or design, I believe that it is essential to maintain continuous updates and follow ups in order to keep the visitors loyal and coming back for more. Stumble Upon user commented on phatterism.com’s creator by saying: “He created an awesome page and an inspiring way to make a blog… last update 2008, sad thing“.
  2. Redundancy: Repetition is a “no, no”! What worked once, twice, three times or even more, will not always work! Remember that! Even Guy Kawasaki made the mistake of becoming dull due to repetition and lack of innovation! [read full article >>]
