European Union Kicks IE’s Butt

I never saw this day coming, but now that it did, I am very impressed.

The European Union, believing that “not knowing you have a choice is no choice at all“, has made Microsoft integrate a Browser Choice window in their operating system for both new users and existing Windows PC users. This screen will provide users with a chance “to make an active choice in the source of the software that acts on your behalf to broker your online experiences, and meet your own unique needs and interests.”

This decision ends a long-running dispute over the US software giant’s dominant market position. This “browser choice screen” will present users with a list of leading browsers — including Mozilla’s Firefox, Apple’s Safari and Google’s Chrome — presented in a random order. The screen will be offered as an automatic download for XP, Vista, and Windows 7.

Apple Should Definitely Reconsider its Overall Strategy – Now!

If you have any of the following Microsoft operating systems: Windows 7, Vista and XP, be scared, be VERY scared, the black screen of death might be heading your way to deem your computer useless!

It never seizes to amaze me how a technology giant, such as Microsoft, can repeatedly fall into the trap of trying to create a solution which ends up being, in fact, a bigger problem!

When will the bad reputation finally pay back?

Apple vs Microsoft

Apple vs Microsoft

I am sitting now at the edge of my seat wondering: When will all this bad reputation and negative PR finally smite Microsoft down? How long can it keep standing its shaky grounds with all the competition out there? My answer is, if all other variables remain constant: never!

Almost every other day, there is a new story, post, article or press release about Microsoft’s failure in one department or another! One day, it’s a Hotmail problem; group e-mails you send out are only sent out to a few recipients! Another day, it’s a problem within its Microsoft Office suit. How about the problems within its operating system as a whole, such as Windows XP’s many errors and Vista’s bad traits?

The iPhone took the world of smart phones by storm and set new standards for these smart small portable devices. Other companies have been looking at Apple with envy eyes and trying over and over again to come up with an iPhone killer.

In the past few months we have witnessed the launching of some real good phones like Motorola’s Droid and Blackberry’s Storm 2, other companies have been following suit and launching their own versions of smart phones. 2010 sounds like a promising year for this market, let’s look into what will be big in the coming year. iPhone 3GS, Motorola Driod, Nokia and Blackberry videos are already flooding the social media, and fighting over the touch-screen do-it-all smart phone market share.

MIT’s Social Garden: Tend to Your Relationships

I’m the kind of guy who can’t keep a plant alive for a week, let alone a relationship” – Jerry O’Connell

Throughout our social lives on the internet, we tend to maintain many more relationships than we do in real life. Keeping all those relationships healthy and staying in touch with everyone becomes more of a chore, and sometimes it’s just hard to remember when you did what!

The Social Garden project from MIT MediaLabs comes in to help solve this problem. Using a plug-in architecture, this Mac OS software will track your interactions with each individual through emails, social networking sites, phone calls, text messages, instant messages and many other channels and tools.  Social Garden will represent each of your relationships as a plant, tracking its progress over time. The more frequent your interactions are with a person, the healthier and bigger the plant will be. This visualization maybe displayed on your computer, mobile phone or even a photo frame.

This will certainly be a fun and pleasant way to be reminded of the person you haven’t heard from in a while, if only it could understand the content of the interactions. Currently, Social Garden will only be able to track the frequency, but hopefully with an infusion of NLP (Natural Language Processing) it might be able to give a more accurate representation of the relationship.

Do you feel overwhelmed by the amount of relationships you have to maintain online? Do you think Social Garden might help you? Let us hear your thoughts.
