Apple’s Ping: Taking a Big Bite of the Social Media Cake?

Ping destroys whatever was left of MySpace’s market share,” said Xeni Jardin, co editor of the technology blog Boing Boing. “It remains to be seen what kind of competition it poses for Facebook.” ~ BBC

Having set shop in the technology department through the MP3 player, the mobile phone and the computer tablet markets with the iPod, iPhone and iPad devices respectively, Apple just recently announced its latest expansion – into social media – with Ping.

Apple's Ping

Ping is to be integrated into Apple’s latest iTunes software update and will enable users, or “Pingers”, to do the following:

  1. Follow friends and others.
  2. Build networks of friends and professional musicians.
  3. Create playlists based on what your friends are listening to.
  4. See music related information including what music your ping friends are buying and what concerts they’re attending.

Furthermore, Ping will be accessible through iTunes, 10 software on Macs and PCs as well as through the iTunes application on iPhones and the iPod Touch.

It seems that MySpace is in for a surprise! This smart yet unanticipated step by Apple might as well be the last straw that will break MySpace’s back!

What do you think: Will Ping be a huge success as is being predicted? Do you believe that Ping is able to substitute MySpace once and for all?

Openbook is Out to Get YOU!

When we sign up to a social media platform, such as Facebook, we – so naively – think that the information we will share will be with the people we choose. However, little by little, and while our addiction is growing bigger and bigger, we find out that things are not what we thought they are! The reality shocks us at first but then, with time, we adjust our privacy setting and our minds as well and we make ourselves feel safe.

Then comes Openbook, a website allows anyone to search embarrassing Facebook updates!

So what is Openbook?

Openbook is simply a new website that allows anyone to trawl through embarrassing and indiscreet status updates posted by Facebook users.

Searching Openbook for potentially compromising terms like “sex”, “boss” or “drunk” throws up thousands of updates from the past few hours.” By Telegraph
