Apple’s Ping: Taking a Big Bite of the Social Media Cake?

Ping destroys whatever was left of MySpace’s market share,” said Xeni Jardin, co editor of the technology blog Boing Boing. “It remains to be seen what kind of competition it poses for Facebook.” ~ BBC

Having set shop in the technology department through the MP3 player, the mobile phone and the computer tablet markets with the iPod, iPhone and iPad devices respectively, Apple just recently announced its latest expansion – into social media – with Ping.

Apple's Ping

Ping is to be integrated into Apple’s latest iTunes software update and will enable users, or “Pingers”, to do the following:

  1. Follow friends and others.
  2. Build networks of friends and professional musicians.
  3. Create playlists based on what your friends are listening to.
  4. See music related information including what music your ping friends are buying and what concerts they’re attending.

Furthermore, Ping will be accessible through iTunes, 10 software on Macs and PCs as well as through the iTunes application on iPhones and the iPod Touch.

It seems that MySpace is in for a surprise! This smart yet unanticipated step by Apple might as well be the last straw that will break MySpace’s back!

What do you think: Will Ping be a huge success as is being predicted? Do you believe that Ping is able to substitute MySpace once and for all?

Digg Users Declare “Quit Digg” Day!

The 30th of August, 2010, might be a day to remember for years to come: The day that Digg pays its dues and is sentenced to obsolescence for its repetitive crimes against its loyal users. Finally, it seems that the time has come for Kevin Rose and his crew to evacuate the premises, maybe come back again with a different social media tool or just disappear off of the face of the earth!

This is based on Read Write Web’s announcement yesterday: “Reddit has taken over the front page of Digg…. Not only did Digg’s users declare today “quit Digg day,” but in order to protest Digg’s new auto-submission system, users are now upvoting every Reddit story on the site. These stories are being submitted to Digg by Reddit itself through the new auto-submission system that is a core part of Digg v4“.

Hyves vs. Facebook: Creating Loyal Users & Catching Criminals!

Hyves came to my attention recently through an article in a Dutch newspaper about how the police are using social media – in this case Hyves.nl – to help look for clues in the murder of a 55 year old man, who was found dead in a forest. The man was killed in a knife attack, his legs were separated from his body and was partly undressed!
